- Log in with your Single Sign-On (SSO) in the format [email protected] – for ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Microsoft Copilot.
- Read up on guidance and policy – check in with your tutor, department or college if unsure about whether you can use AI for a task.
- Comply with any rules on AI use for your course. Each assessment may have different rules on authorised or unauthorised AI use.
- Self-assess your current AI skills using our digital skills health check tool.
- Join free training sessions to learn how to make the most of these tools at Oxford – including the New to Generative AI at Oxford session for support on getting started using Oxford’s AI tools and the follow-on session Next steps with Generative AI at Oxford. Your college or department may also arrange our 'Making Good Learning Decisions with AI' training for you.
- Be careful about the information you share with AI tools. Never upload confidential, personal or sensitive information unless you know it is appropriate to do so.
- Refer to the University’s AI governance resources for guidance on acceptable use of AI at Oxford, and decisions around approved AI features and agents.
- Good prompts lead to better results. Be clear about your goal, provide relevant context, and ask AI to explain its reasoning or suggest alternative viewpoints to improve the quality of responses.
- Check AI suggestions using reliable sources. Use library resources, journals and course reading lists to verify information and deepen your understanding. AI can get it wrong.
- Don’t cheat yourself with AI – use AI tools to support your learning, not replace it. You should always be able to explain and defend any work you submit.
